Success make people do funny things; even successful people; even legends. That can be the only reason when someone like Switzerland's Martina Hingis announced her retirement from tennis after admitting she is under investigation for a positive test for cocaine.
Shockwaves were felt in the tennis world when reports said that Hingis failed a drugs test during this year's Wimbledon. Now she say that she is innocent but will retire rather than fight the doping charge. Hingis, winner of five Grand Slams, is on a comeback after retiring in 2003 due to persistent ankle injury problems. She only returned to the top flight in 2006, but despite showing her potential by getting to 7th in the world at one point, she has struggled to recover her old form.
Maybe she is innocent; maybe it's a bad test; but I feel Hingis should stay and fight the charge. By retiring like this...well, it's had to accept she is innocent isn't it? And after her outstanding career to boot! A champion and a fan favorite well respected by everyone; what made her do it?
Like I said; The desire to have success make people do funny things.
