As everyone knows, the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be held in
Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014. The tournament was awarded to Brazil on
March 2004 and thus far, about US$3.47 billion has been reportedly spent on
stadium projects.
10 years, US$3.47 billion later…and 3 of the stadiums are
still NOT ready!
Now I can understand if Brazil still has teething problems
with transportation or accommodations; that happens. Airports, train services,
hotels; if they are new, chances are there are going to be some that won't be
totally ready. I can understand that.
But the stadiums themselves? Come on! Those you got to get
right. How in the world can the Brazilians spend all those money, have all
those time and still not be ready? Reports from FIFA themselves say some
walkways and lightnings at the stadiums are not ready and will not be ready in
time for the World Cup. Now for those of you who say only the
"inside" of the stadium matters; well if that's the case, why don't
we have the World Cup at Jalan Besar?
It's insane that the Brazilians are still not ready. FIFA
(and the Brazilian government) need to make sure heads get rolled for this
mess. The world deserved better than this performance for the World Cup.
