Countdown 37- After 3 weeks of improvement, the winning streak ended with a thud! Countdown's problem is that everyone who read the series wish the plot would advance a little faster than it has been. Mary Marvel likes power and is well on her way to being Black Mary; ok, get there already people! I still have no idea what Holly Robinson is doing in the series, and Donna Troy's team in the Nanoverse might as well not be in the book. What have they done in the less 3 weeks? Nothing! Yet we keep seeing the team for 2-3 pages every issue. They are a waste of space, though not as great as the Jimmy Olsen storyline. Jimmy made a big discovery involving Superman, but the dreadful pacing of the storyline made me want Superman to just kill him to shut him up. The only bright spot is the Piper/Trickster storyline which has been constantly getting better. A few funny moments between the two saved the storyline because the plot also moved nowhere there as well. Even without the shadow of 52, this series is just poor.
Booster Gold #1- Booster Gold was to be the breakout star of 52, a position that was taken (rightfully) by Black Adam. The Booster Gold storyline was by far 52's strongest plot device, re-creating the Multiverse, but the character himself was not great. A time-traveling, self-absorbed, glory-hound hero is not really a great basis for a long-running series. However, this was one promising start. The issue starts with Booster trying to rejoin the Justice League, but Rip Hunter has other ideas. The reborn Multiverse is chaotic following Mr. Mind's munching of time and space, and Hunter want Booster to be his pointman and put a stop to any anomalies. Booster's struggle is that he can't let other people knows what he is doing as that will only increase the anomalies. He is the greatest savior the Multiverse has ever seen, but no one can ever know about it. Did I say he is a glory-hound yet? Writers Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz also surround Booster with a good supporting cast. Rip Hunter,Skeets and Daniel Carter seems interesting characters that will greatly increase the value of the book. Interesting and far better than I fear.
