Singapore’s first Olympic medalist

As Singapore tried desperately to sweep the controversy surrounding the Singapore Table Tennis Association under the carpet, a sliver lining came out of this.

48 years after he won Singapore’s first (and some say still only) ever Olympic medal, weightlifter Tan Howe Liang has been awarded $10,000 by NTUC FairPrice. Tan took silver for weightlifting in the 1960 Olympic Games back when there were no cash reward schemes for sports excellence.

I think this is a great idea. Like Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, this was a good gesture and the man did deserve it. I’m not a big fan of NTUC but they got it right this time. Congratulations Mr. Tan!

While it is good that something was done for Mr Tan, I could not help it to think that they are using him to deflect the bad press from the table tennis mess.

To make use of him for this kind of thing is damn shameful...

You dun know that NTUC is gahment also meh?

Then I tell u, the NTUC Secretary General attends Cabinet Meetings because he is also a Minister.

During these meetings, he gets instructions from God himself.

Don't be naive to think NTUC is about workers, for the workers and from the workers.

Time to wake up.

By the way, this preoccupation with the STTA, is preventing many of us from learning from what's happening up north.

The reason is the opposition up north is showing us one way we can block unpopular policies proposed by the govt in parliament - without a two-third majority unpopular policies proposed by govt can be blocked by the opposition in parliament!

I think the bad press from the table tennis mess is indeflectable, the papers has been on it even before the team came back to Singapore. As for NTUC itself...well, to be fair no one is all good or all bad. In this case, they did a great thing. (Man, you have no idea how hard it was for me to say that!)

NTUC is by the workers but for the Employers and Government. That's also the case with many other bodies. Singaporeans are just naive to believe otherwise.

As for using Tan Howe Liang to help the STTA defect the bad press, Anon 12.35 hit the nail on the head. You see, NTUC is one organisation very useful to the rullng party in more ways than just being a union.
