Now that it’s confirmed Singapore national team coach,
Raddy Avramovic, will leave at the end of the year, the chase is on for the
next coach of our national football team. Raddy leaving will come as no major
surprise to anyone as just last month he got involved in a “dispute” with the
FAS (Football Association of Singapore) on the running of the local S-League.
Right now, there has been a few names tossed into the hat
but one thing seems to strike out. There are calls from the Singapore
public for the FAS to name a local coach. Currently the local front-runners are
Richard Bok, Fandi Ahmad and V Sundramoorthy; all worthy names in local
football.
Having said that; I disagree with the notion that the Singapore
national coach HAS to be a Singaporean. Don’t get me wrong, I would love for
the national coach to be a Singaporean, but to me being a Singaporean is less
important than having the most qualified coach for the role.
The simple fact is that currently we have a terrible national
team. Our team hasn’t scored a victory yet in 2012 and most of our current
players are just not good enough. Our national team need to undergo a
rebuilding process and for that, we need a good coach who is willing to blood
new, young players into the national team.
Having a coach who is willing to do that is most important
part. Whether or not that coach is local or foreign is secondary. Nationality
be dammed; I think it’s far more important for the FAS to pick the best
candidate than the best local candidate.

The whole FAS team should resign and let a new team with new direction take over. They have been given sufficient time to get our football up to par but it seems that we are regressing.
Let our talented footballers do their NS on the football field instead of in the army, Police etc
so that they can concentrate on the sports.
I don't think it's the matter of NS. It's wasn't a problem in the past. I think the big problem is the development (or lack of) of young Singaporean players. To me, the best option is to stop getting ready-made foreign players to don the Singapore shirt and develop the young players we have. It's the best long-term solution to our problem.
