How did a plane bounded for Malaysia end up landing in Melbourne?
The news headlines have been stating a Malaysia-bound AirAsia X plane end up landing
in a different country but guess what? The headlines have been misleading (to
say the least).
When reading the details, the AirAsia X plane took off from
Sydney bound for Malaysia. Air traffic controllers then went on alert when they
noticed the plane was flying in the wrong direction. After some checks between
them and the pilot, it was found that the wrong longitudinal position was entered
into the aircraft system. Attempts to fix the problem came to nothing and the pilot
decided to return to Sydney. However bad weather prevented that and the pilot
was forced to fly to Melbourne instead.
That’s it. That’s all there was to the story, but in a bid
for more eyeballs, news site on the internet say the plane “landed” in the
wrong country. Technically true, but also totally wrong. Another reason not to
trust news on the internet!
