Silly Mistake

Stupid! That’s the first thing that sprung to my mind when I read in the Straits Times newspaper that Mr. Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for National Development, stated that the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has never shrink the size of HDB flats. In fact, the headline was "HDB flat sizes have remained unchanged the past 15 years: Khaw Boon Wan".

Sometimes our ministers just don’t help themselves. I mean talk about stupid! Even I can tell you HDB flats have gotten smaller over the years. My parent’s 3-room flat bought in the 1980s is just a little smaller than my sister’s 4-room flat bought a few years ago. Worse; even the HDB admit the flats has gotten smaller. Just look at their website and it will show that a normal standard flat in Farrer Road built in 1974 is 120 sq m while a normal standard flat at Yishun to be completed 2015 is 110 sq m. It’s a matter of public records!

I can only imagine that this was a slip of the tongue or that Mr. Khaw was answering a question from the audience because it is such a silly mistake that it’s hard to imagine anyone putting something like this in a written speech.

This is not a slip. He deliberately frame the context to one over the last 15 years. His spin: tell the truth, just not the whole truth.

Also, usually when THEY tell us that things have remained unchanged over a period of time, it means it's time things change! Think fare hikes. So HDB flats will get smaller, soon.

i couldn't agree more with sgcynic. khaw's claim that hdb flat sizes have not shrunk (in the last 15 years) was absolutely deliberate. if you do not read the online posts, you believe him. you wonder if You are imagining things. the minister cant be wrong after all, can he?

people's english now is poor and they don't look at sub-clauses and such. just simply believe.

khaw not only definitely can be wrong on this score, but he and his colleagues have been wrong on many other scores too. one has only to look at khaw's record at the ministry of health.

however, this is a deliberate attempt to pull wool over pple's eyes, to trade on their ignorance. it's so pathetic that he resorts to this. where is the integrity?

why is it so difficult to admit that public flats Have shrunk? why does he feel be can't speak the truth? and if this skirting of the facts is seen necessary on such small matters, what about major issues?

I also got his “past 15 years” comment. It does not matter. It doesn’t matter to me or any Singaporeans I had spoken to so far.
No one cares about the 15 years caveat Mr. Khaw Boon Wan put in, what everyone cares about is the HDB flats have NOT gotten smaller part of the statement. That’s why I say sometimes our ministers just don’t help themselves. This is a statement that should never have seen the light of day.
I mean does anyone seriously believe any Singaporean would give a damm about the 15 years caveat? That's why I say it is so stupid the statement has to be a mistake.

Sometimes their comments pissed me off. Is either they shoot without knowing the truth or just being liars. People who buy and sell HDB houses will feel the difference. Even contractors can tell you flats are getting smaller.

He didn't actually lie. His "15 year" caveat is pretty correct. But it does not matter! Not to anyone I spoken to so far because everyone knows HDB flats are smaller now than in the past.
