Last week I put up a few photos showing the flood along Orchard Road due to torrential rain. Since then, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) had blamed the flood on debris which were trapped in a canal and that slowed the drainage of the water from the area.
The PUB has come under heavy criticism as Singaporeans want someone to blame for the flood. The unexpected flood caused millions of dollars in losses in Singapore’s iconic shopping belt, and although the PUB is in charge of such matters in Singapore, I don’t think it’s quite fair to blame them totally for the floods. It was heavy torrential rain! Not only that, it was heavy torrential rain that lasted for hours!
Heavy torrential rain is not exactly something you expect to last for hours. I’m not saying PUB should not take some responsibility for the Orchard Road floods but the criticism raining down on them now (pun intended) is over-the-top. The PUB has already taken some action by ordering a review of all the major canals in Singapore to prevent an incident like this from happening again.
They are NOT going to succeed, at least not totally.
Despite human’s belief, we cannot control nature; Mother Nature is the one who controls us. If Singaporeans need to blame someone for the flood, then blame the guy upstairs. After all, he’s the one who called the rain.
